An article and interview with science fiction author, futurist, and rocket enthusiast Arthur C. Clarke commemorating his 1945 predictions in his article “Extra-Terrestrial Relays: Can Rocket Stations Give World Wide Radio Coverage?” The article, published in the magazine Wireless World in 2005, describes how Clarke’s “prediction of satellite communications has come true in ways.” From the British Broadcasting

I just looked at the pictures on that link and I believe most or all of them are from a place in Botswana called Duba Plains. I was in that camp last September and saw some of those lions. The female with the blinded eye is called Silver Eye and she is notorious in the area. The pride there hunts and kills buffalo, as the pictures show and she was blinded a few years ago, apparently by a kick to the head by a buffalo she was trying to kill. She has been very aggressive since she was blinded and has killed all the lion cubs born to other females for several years. When we were there our guide told us that the other females had finally begun to use other tactics to keep their cubs from her presence to keep the pride going. It has caused a decline in the size of the pride and no one knows if they can remain intact as a pride because of this behavior.
The big male is one of two called the Duba Boys. One of them died recently, apparently killed by a younger male who challenged him. Our guides told us that the days of the Duba Boys were numbered mainly because of their age. We got very close to one of them. Images attached.
We saw Silver Eye from a distance and took off across the grassland to see what she was up to, but we got stuck in a deep mud hole and had to get towed out. I did not like being on the ground in an area where the pride was active. Nothing happened, but it was disquieting, to say the least.
The lions here are unique. There is water everywhere and these cats have overcome their natural dislike of getting wet and swim in the channels all the time. They are 15-20% larger than other lions and are very intimidating to see in person, much more so than other lions I’ve seen in Africa.
The lions and buffalo here fight constantly and have been the subject of books and films. Check out “Relentless Enemies” at Nat Geo:
The film is going to be shown on May 14. We saw the couple who do this work when we were at Duba Plains. They are working on a new film about the lions.
