TIL I learned that Mexico, which abolished slavery in 1837, refused the United States’ request to return escaped slaves back up north
Mexico has a much different culture than the US. If you go further down south of the border, they have more of a community perspective. They help each other in need and every random person you pass by the street they greet you sincerely. Sometimes they converse and become very well acquainted. You can feel the love they have towards each other even if they are strangers.
OK but let’s not ignore either the fact that there were plenty of Californios who engaged in slavery in Alta California. It’s not that clear cut.

The Texas War for Independence was actually about slavery. General Santa Ana originally was going to keep the status quo but changed his mind after he won the previous war. He made laws that required landowners to be Mexican citizens and therefore unable to own slaves at all. Mexico also went one step further in making any escaped slave that got to Mexico a citizen automatically. A lot of people in northern Mexico are Afro Latino because of this. I’m actually pretty sure my family is descended from them although I’ve heard my grandfathers family was originally from Cuba so I’m not sure which is the case.
Also, when the Anglos and Tejanos won the war, whole Native American tribes were separated with black members leaving to Mexico while some of the other half stayed.
Apparently there are still communities of Afro-Mexicans who are descended from escaped slaves who still sing folk songs in English.

Sam Houston and his followers were terrible human beings.
Its greatt to learn about how Mexico stood up for what was right and helped those in need..
They also have a saying that goes “where one can, so can two. Where 2 can eat so can four.” Visited a few times. Met people on diving trips. They were always welcoming. Went to a boat captain’s home. Dirt floor, but they cooked us a real feast. Those who have less share more of what little they have. Wouldn’t let us bring anything. Last dive of this trip, my buddy left him a brand new octopus and regulator. His girlfriend boxed a jewlery set the captain’s wife complemented her on. I left him my dive computer. We had to trick him, though. We knew he’d be too proud. We wrapped everything in a sweatshirt, stuck it in a duffel bag and didn’t let him open it until we were gone.
Gold story! As a Chilean. I love México

Yup, and Davy Crockett died at the Alamo so white men could own slaves in Texas.
