David French writes that his first demo on campus was 1991 – probably during the anti Apartheid movement. He is but a newbie. I was a student activist in the 1960s during the anti Vietnam War movement. Then, we were protesting US genocide in SE Asia — much as the students today are protesting US enabled genocide by Israel in Gaza. Most of the violence on campus has been caused not by the protesters but by pro-Israel mobs that attacked the students. This is what happened at UCLA. The mobs are known to have included former IDF troops. In some cases the attackers were paid to disrupt the protests. It’s also very clear why the Israelis are so upset. The students are calling for full divestment of the universities’ endowments from companies that support Israeli Apartheid. Similar student demands in the 1980s led to the collapse of Apartheid in S Africa. Israel faces the same outcome…and the sooner the better in my view. The slander that the protesters are antisemitic is belied by the fact that many of the students are Jews. The younger generation of Jews has turned against Zionism – a welcome development in our world.

Watchman, what of the night?
