Lovely. I always say that my proper Victorian grandmother civilized me. She taught me love of family, history, books, photography. She was no prude. I happily thumbed through her big silent movie books that had nudes in them and felt no shame as a boy. I raised a granddaughter to know that she could ask me about anything, with no judgement. Now that she’s grown, we have a bond of the songs we sang together and the cap guns and pocket knives grandpa got for her when boys told her girls couldn’t have such things. Grandparents are important.

Watchman, what of the night?
