Interesting article. These folks appear to be tickling at the idea of recognizing the presence of self aware collective entities dwelling in the transverse universe of mankind’s digital interconnections. I’ve been hypothesizing such entities for over a decade based on several converging lines of reasoning, these guys/gals would be good candidates to actually prove the existence of such entities.

When the complex system begins demonstrating a survival instinct/action contradictory to its’ components, that is to say one which does not support the survive to thrive trajectory of the individuals within that system but rather the system itself it is then reasonable to assume the system is acting on its’ own behalf and qualifies as a self aware life form. Of course, there is a great deal of research to be done before that could be asserted into an academic environment, many factors to be explained or eliminated, but it’s good to see them on the right path.

It is a most useful tool when analyzing social behavior to contemplate the psychology of such collective entities from the assumption that each collective entity is hosted on many individual humans based on its’ contribution to each individual host’s self definition, must compete with other entities of its’ own kind for any given human’s loyalty, and must make concessions within the psychology of the individual hosts to remain compatible with the other elements defined within that individual human. I strongly suspect that once that factor is integrated into their thinking they’ll have much better luck with their endeavors, things will simplify to manageable levels for them.

But who am I to say such things? I’m no academic, just a redneck gunslinger turned philosopher on horseback.
