Hmmm… fact check. In the article the author states that anyone who thinks that “slavery wasn’t the cause of the Civil War is just plain wrong.” The way I heard the story slavery ws part of the mechanism but not the political cause. The cause was the 3/5 rule that was gerrymandering congressional representation to favor the lower population agrarian south over the industrial north in Congress. Not that ending the obvious evil of slavery wasn’t a fine and noble ambition, it was even if in utter naive ignorance the more dangerous hidden evils of slavery were allowed to escape the defeated Confederacy and take up residence on Wall Street. But that’s a different kettle of fish entirely.
