Scientists have suggested there are multiple mysterious structures hidden beneath the Greenland ice sheet.
Per Space.com, radar and other technologies have helped scientists discover what’s sitting below Greenland’s ice sheet, which is about 9,800 feet thick.
- “These new tools reveal a complex, invisible landscape that holds clues to the past and future of the Arctic,” according to Space.com.
Some of the hidden structures include:
- The world’s largest canyon, which has a high point of 460 feet and stretches longer than 300 miles. At some points, the canyon is 6 miles wide and 1 mile deep.
- There are a number of mountains and depressions tucked under the ice sheet, including a circle of coastal mountains.
- There’s a lake from possibly millions of years ago. In fact, “it was home to a lake the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined,” according to Space.com.
- There are some jewel-like lakes filled with crystal water.
- There’s some evidence of where meteors might have crashed.
University of Utah scientists have been investigating Greenland’s ice sheet, too. As the Deseret News reported, the scientists have been looking to see how water could exist unfrozen in the ice sheets, which is deemed one of the coldest places on Earth.
Greenland’s ice sheet has been experiencing melting because of high temperatures in recent years, according to The Associated Press.
