Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott don’t want Joe Biden to succeed.

Re “Texas governor orders ban on vaccine mandates” (Oct. 11): Joe Biden ran on a platform of ending the COVID-19 threat. What is the effect of a real or even a perceived failure to do so on Democrats’ chances next election?

Your answer to this rhetorical question is absolutely correct. And it is also the answer to why so many Republican politicians and right-wing talking heads are anti-vaxxers.

Donald Trump understands this COVID-19 political dynamic, and Republican politicians know they can’t win without his support. So Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott risk alienation of major businesses (and campaign contributors) by forbidding mask mandates.

And Trump’s chances in 2024 are looking up.
