Jennifer (aka Dr. J) 7-9 minutes 6/17/2025

Let’s embark on an unforgettable journey through the charming streets of Amsterdam, where history and beauty literally stand at every doorstep!

While the canals and step-gabled houses are iconic, I think it’s the incredible, diverse doors that tell the real story. Join me as we discover some of the most beautiful entrances in the Dutch capital, each with a unique architectural vibe that will undoubtedly make you want to pack your bags and experience Amsterdam for yourself!

Go visit your favorite door or put on your walking shoes and see them all!

Let’s explore my curated list of 10 amazing Amsterdam doors selected from my own travels. The doors are presented in an order that makes sense if you wanted to walk between then. Transit times on foot are included between each entry.

1. A Striking Pop of Red in the Jordaan

A bright red double door with vertical grooved panels and a small mail slot, flanked by white pilasters, on a red brick building. A transom window above features stained glass with golden letters spelling "PNIEL"

The Jordaan district never disappoints! Our first door really pops with its stunning red color. Take a moment to admire this colorful door at Marnixstraat 81. I love how the bold color stands out against the classic Dutch brickwork. This charming entrance, complete with elegant details, is a perfect example of the picturesque beauty you’ll discover when exploring Amsterdam’s most vibrant neighborhoods. Finding unique doors like this is truly one of the best things to do in Amsterdam!

This next door is a showstopper! Prepare to be delighted by the vibrant facade at Hazenstraat 29, tucked away in the lively Jordaan district of Amsterdam! I love how the stunning bright blue doors beautifully complement the intricate stained-glass windows above, creating a symphony of color and classic Dutch design. You won’t regret taking some time to explore the nooks and crannies of the Jordaan if you are a fan of door photography like I am.

3. Art Nouveau Elegance on Bloemgracht

A large, multi-paned window with sheer white curtains is centered between two dark black doors, all set within a red brick facade with decorative black and white striped bricks forming an arch. Yellow potted flowers sit on the right.

Sit back and take a moment to appreciate these neighbors. This inviting facade at Bloemgracht 16 is also located in the picturesque Jordaan district! The distinctive black and white tiling above the archway reminds me of piano keys. The elegant decorations around the lites in the left doorframe hint at the beautiful Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architectural style. This stunning entrance embodies the elegant and artistic flair of the Netherlands, offering another wonderful photo opportunity to help the memories of your trip live on after you’ve returned home.

If you visit Amsterdam in the Spring, definitely head over to see this charming set of wooden doors at Keizersgracht 709. They were absolutely bursting with vibrant purple wisteria when I visited in May! I love how nature and architecture combine to create a beautiful tableau on one of Amsterdam’s most iconic canals. This door exemplifies the delightful, green-infused streetscapes of the Netherlands. Discovering such floral spectacles while exploring Amsterdam’s canals is truly one of my favorite things to do when I’m in town during tulip season.
