There has been a great deal of speculation about Jeffrey Epstein's New Mexico property, known as Zorro Ranch. Some ideas have more evidence behind them than others.
The main theories other than sex trafficking include:
A eugenics or "breeding" project. This is the best-documented non-trafficking claim. Several people who knew Epstein said he talked about using the ranch as a place where women would be impregnated with his sperm to spread his DNA. He had a longstanding interest in genetics, transhumanism, and eugenics, although there is no evidence that such a project was ever carried out. Department of Justice+1
Hosting scientists and intellectuals. Epstein invited prominent academics and scientists to the ranch. Some visitors have acknowledged attending meals or discussions there, saying they saw no criminal activity. Critics believe these gatherings helped Epstein cultivate influence and an image as an intellectual patron. The Guardian
Blackmail. Because Epstein associated with wealthy and powerful people, many have speculated that the ranch, like some of his other properties, may have been used to gather compromising information. However, no public evidence has established that Zorro Ranch itself was used as a blackmail operation. This remains speculation.
Financial or business activities. Some have wondered whether the ranch was used for financial dealings, tax planning, or as a secluded retreat for influential guests. There is no public evidence that these were criminal enterprises.
One reason the ranch continues to generate speculation is that, unlike Epstein's homes in New York and Florida, it apparently was not comprehensively searched by federal investigators after his 2019 arrest, leaving many unanswered questions. New Mexico authorities reopened an investigation in 2026 to examine what may have occurred there over many years. ABC News+1
So, among the non-trafficking theories, the DNA/"breeding" idea has the strongest documentary support because multiple contemporaneous reports and witnesses described Epstein talking about it. The blackmail theory is widely discussed but has not been proven with respect to the ranch itself.
