Yet multiple reviews of those pages concluded they did not support his core accusation. Far from showing a Chinese plot to sink his reelection, the material spotlighted an assessment that Moscow had tried to help him. According to the release, one file details how Vladimir Putin and top Russian officials steered campaigns to push damaging claims about Joe Biden.
Experts who go through the documents said most of the content simply repeated risks flagged long ago. A CNN examination determined that nothing in it is proven. The declassification push is being led in part by the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, headed by former GOP Rep. Devin Nunes.
Republican election attorney Ben Ginsberg, speaking to CNN, said there remained “no evidence of any effect on an election result,” and noted the evidence Trump had teased still had not surfaced. Those conclusions line up with years of earlier findings.
Congressional reviews from both parties on the 2016 and 2020 contests turned up no sign that vote tallies had been technically rigged, despite the president’s insistence otherwise. Detractors said the speech conveniently gave the Russian leader a pass, while China brushed off Trump’s charges as “pure fabrications.”
This incident also puts the MAGA movement’s years long stolen-election message in an awkward spot, since the GOP’s own declassified files point to Moscow rather than Beijing. For now, the paperwork that was meant to prove the president’s case appears to tell a very different story.
