President Donald Trump is celebrating a modest decline in gasoline prices as an affordability victory heading into the midterm elections.

Trump reposted an article from the pro-Trump outlet Just the News declaring “Cheaper drugs, cheaper beef, cheaper gas” and arguing that falling prices could put Republicans in a stronger position with voters. The article points to a roughly three-cent decline in the national average over the previous week, to about $4.01–$4.08 per gallon, while acknowledging that prices remain elevated because of disruptions tied to the Iran conflict and pressures on global oil supplies.

The White House bragged about $3/gallon gasoline in January. Now, Trump celebrates $4/gallon gasoline.

The celebration comes after an expensive summer at the pump. Trump’s reposted article admitted this was only “a bit of relief” for drivers “after weeks of elevated costs.”

The post is particularly notable because Trump promised voters something dramatically different during his 2024 campaign. Trump pledged to bring gasoline prices down to below $2 a gallon, making cheap energy a central part of his affordability pitch. Instead, he is now touting a few cents of weekly relief while gasoline remains more than twice the price of his promised target.
