The winter of 1886–1887 was a bad one too. It killed thousands of cattle and ended the open range cattle empire. Charles M. Russell was a young horse wrangler at the time and he sent a watercolor of the decimation to his boss back east. The picture was printed in every major newspaper and led to Russell being known as an artist rather than just another cowboy.

I can remember walls of snow 3-6 ft high when I was a kid in Washington State. Farmers and Ranchers didn’t have 4-wheel drives and you had to chain up and take a run to get out on the road. Those old timers could take those old trucks places you wouldn’t believe…because they had to.
Dad would take us kids to school on grandpa’s logging bobsled with the tractor chained up and jingling. Kids would pile on all the way to school..and Dad never slowed down…just grinned and puffed on his cigarette.
