What foolish nonsense! The north wasnt about abolishing slavery for- gasp- righteousness sake. But for economic reasons… the uber dominant northern economy needed low priced cotton which only slavery provided (at that time) but feared slavery would up end the industrial base in the north. So they opposed the institution without ever embracing the blacks themselves. Democrats were still the largest party by far -even in the north but were fractured allowing Republicans to gain power at the national level but then as now democrats dominate at the local levels… and they made Jim Crow a national institution!!! The south had little choice as the north had strangled it economically.. and the north only used the slave issue to justify their oppression!!! Had the south discovered sharecropping BEFORE the war… that war would never have occurred!!! And thats why it took 100 yrs AFTER the war before blacks began to see any true equality!!! And for the south to recover economically… No one forgot- yes the south romanticized their part…but no one forgot. It simply was a fantasy that was never true.
