    For me, somehow, the two paintings bring to mind the beginning of The Bard’s Romeo and Juliet… paraphrased, of course… “two paintings, alike in dignity…” Neither painting in and of itself can answer the question “what are they looking at?” But, the two of them shown together, assumed to be connected by some common thought? I would put forward the possibility that the couple in the one are in some manner related to the man in the first, perhaps one of them his child, and that impossible distance implied in both paintings is that difference that a difference in age and experience always lays between those of different generations. Just a thought.
