In 1898, a white supremacist mob brutally massacred African Americans in the city of Wilmington, NC. They then kicked out elected city government. The Wilmington Massacre is the only successful coup in American history.

not true!!! during the grant administration they staged several coups kicking blacks and republicans out of state govts all across the south!
