Her own court appointed lawyer was a founding board member of the institution trying to sterilize her. Historians have since found she likely wasn’t what her era called feebleminded at all, her real situation was poverty and an unwanted pregnancy her foster family wanted to make disappear. The ruling authorized roughly 70,000 forced sterilizations nationwide and directly influenced Nazi Germany’s own sterilization law a few years later, cited by Nazi defendants at Nuremberg in their own defense.
